What these map layers mean

  • Flood zone

FEMA's map label for an area, like Zone AE or Zone X. It describes mapped flood hazard, not what will happen to one house.

  • SFHA

The Special Flood Hazard Area: land FEMA maps as having a 1-percent chance of flooding in any year.

  • Area ratings

FEMA's National Risk Index rates whole census tracts and counties for hazards like hurricanes and heat, not individual homes.
